Operator working under someone’s authority

If you are an owner operator working under someone’s authority, you will need the following coverages:

Non-Truck Liability Insurance

It covers you when you use your truck for personal use, when you are in your home state and off duty, like going shopping or travelling to sporting event. This coverage is designed to protect you from gap in primary liability coverage provided to you by the trucking company. Non truck liability does not cover you if you are carrying cargo or dispatched to another state by your carrier.

Physical Damage

There two types of coverage normally offered and purchased:
Collision Coverage – pays for damages to your truck caused in a motor vehicle accident (regardless of fault).
Comprehensive Coverage – pays for damages to your vehicle caused by other than collision incidents, such as fire, vandalism, falling objects and theft.

When you purchase physical damage coverage, carefully consider your vehicle’s condition and research its market value, so our agents can help you purchase proper limits of coverage.

Operating under your own authority

If you are operating under your own authority (you have a DOT number), you will need a combination of the following coverages:

Commercial Auto Liability

This is a required coverage that pays for injuries and damages caused by your negligence. Such as for repairs to another vehicle or pain and suffering pay out to a pedestrian or driver of another vehicle. If you are For-Hire trucker, majority of shippers will require you to carry limits of $1,000,000. Liability insurance is required for insurance companies to complete your Federal, State and Local fillings.

Motor Truck Cargo

Commonly referred to as cargo, this coverage provides protection to the freight or commodities hauled in your truck if it was damaged due to a motor vehicle accident or natural disaster. Majority of car haulers will have different limit requirements depending on number of vehicles that can be hauled at the time and type of vehicles hauled.  Usually if you are hauling more than four new luxury or even one exotic vehicle you will need a minimum of $250,000 to $500,000 of cargo coverage with higher limits warranted if applicable. Used and/or damaged auto haulers usually need limits of $100,000 to $250,000.

General Liability

It protects you from injuries and property damages caused to other parties due to activities not directly related to operating the truck. Such as customer’s slip and fall incidents at your facilities or negligent acts of your driver when in scope of your operations (other than motor vehicle accident).

Underinsured Motorist

This coverage pays you for injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident caused by negligence of underinsured party. Underinsured party is someone who has auto liability limits that are lower than the value of your claim.

Uninsured Motorist

This coverage pays you for injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident caused by negligence of uninsured party.

Medical Expenses

Depending on state, this coverage may cover your and/or pedestrian’s medical expenses incurred due to motor vehicle accident.
